VE Day 80

VE Day 80

Today we remember and give thanks for the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

We are forever indebted to all those who fought, both overseas and on the home front - and particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice - for the freedoms we enjoy today.

His Majesty King George VI led the celebrations from the balcony of Buckingham Palace 80 years ago - and last Monday it was great to see our patron, His Majesty King Charles III lead our commemorations.

We also remember that “Great Briton”, Sir Winston Churchill, who led us through those darkest hours, a true and inspiring leader, as well as Society members such as Dame Vera Lynn, amongst many others, who did so much to “Keep the home fires burning”.

For many of us our parents were involved in one way or another with that war - and have had the opportunity to meet many of the veterans - so it has a more personal resonance to us. For the younger generations it is ancient history, so it’s very important that we keep remembering and commemorating what happened, learn from it and do our very best to ensure it never happens again.

On behalf of the members of the Royal Society of St. George, I say thank you to all those in all walks of life, from England and around the Commonwealth who earned that great victory for us.
